Arrival at the booked hostel during the day. Once you have checked in and moved into your rooms, you can familiarise yourself with your hostel and the surrounding neighbourhood. We recommend a walk along the longest remaining piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery. Or maybe take a stroll along the banks of the river Spree and make first contact with history in the New Government district.
After a delicious breakfast you we will meet up with our qualified guide who takes you on a 2-hour sightseeing tour delivering an impressive insight into Berlin’s history. The end of the tour will be the legendary shopping boulevard Kurfürstendamm with its countless restaurants where you can have lunch. Afterwards we would like to invite you to 800 years Berlin history at the multi-media based exhibition “Story of Berlin”. Highlight of this extraordinary museum is the tour of an original nuclear shelter situated below the museum. The remaining day will be at your leisure.
Today’s start will be very political. Maybe you would like to take part in a presentation in the plenary hall of the Reichstag, which is the seat of the German Bundestag or ‘federal government’ (English-speaking tours available Tuesdays at noon). A MUST is a visit to the roof of the building. The breathtaking views from the impressive glass-covered dome will astonish you. For the afternoon we have planned a visit to the Museum Checkpoint Charlie – the Wall museum next to the legendary Checkpoint Charlie border crossing, the geographical focal point of the Cold War, where two worlds split apart and joined again.
More than 66 years ago – on the 20th January 1942 at the Villa of Reinhard Heydrich, Head of the Reich Security Main Office, a meeting of high-ranking civil servants decided on the deportation and murder of all European Jews. This meeting for the genocide of Jews has become known as the Wannsee Conference! And this historical and monumental site will be on your tour itinerary today. Take part in a guided tour or even an educational programme which provides information on the historical, ideological and structural background as well as the aftermath of National Socialism and the question of how Germany has dealt with its past since 1945.
The remaining day will be at your leisure, maybe for a boat trip on the Wannsee or to Potsdam.
Homeward journey after breakfast.
